When it’s time for some fresh air, Union County offers a wide array of Reservations, Parks & Pocket Parks. Being a resident of the woodland-filled towns makes it easy to embrace the beauty of nature. From parks to bodies of water, the outdoors offers an alternative for the usual fluorescent-lit indoor spaces. It’s so nice that these desirable NYC Suburbs offer an easy commute to Manhattan, yet still provide so many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
Just on the edge of the Westfield Downtown is Mindowaskin Park. Mindowaskin Park is a favorite of area Moms. The new Playground was just completed in 2019. The iconic Mindowaskin pond is beautiful all year round. The pond welcomes birds for their daily birdbath in the summer. In Winters that are cold enough, the pond freezes over for ice skating. Visit the park in the summertime for free concerts under the gazebo. Art shows also take advantage of the Park. Mindowaskin Park is a beautiful backdrop for wedding photography.
With enough amenities to create a day filled with nature, Tamaques Reservation is a popular spot for Westfield residents.The walking circle that is available to joggers and bikers isn’t the only attraction in the vast reservation. The landscape offers activities for any and all ages, including basketball courts, handball courts, eight tennis courts, yes, eight. Find yourself at Tamaques Reservation on a warm summer day or crisp fall evening.
Watchung Reservation and Echo Lake Park in Mountainside have endless activities for everyone to enjoy. Neglect spending a day inside and appreciate all that these parks have to offer.
Watchung Reservation, Union County’s largest park, is bordered by the city of Summit, the borough of Mountainside, and the townships of Berkley Heights, Scotch Plains, and Springfield. The 2,000+ acre park offers skiing, fishing, outdoor ice skating, 13 miles of hiking, camping, and much more. At the Watchung Stables, the activities continue. You can attend horseback riding lessons, horse shows, and go trail riding through the beautiful woodland. Within the Watchung Reservation, find Mountainside’s Trailside Nature and Science Center, a great place to see dozens of soft exhibits including wigwams, real-life animals exhibits, and a night-life theatre.
Echo Lake Park
If you’re a fan of fishing, trails, and paddle boats, visit Echo Lake Park. The park is an excellent place to spend the day, and perhaps have a picnic. The park is dog-friendly, offering a space for our furry friends. Embrace all four seasons in Echo Lake Park with ice skating, sledding, fishing and pedal boats that are available to glide along the serene lake.
Watch the sunlight glisten along the surface of the lake as you’re crossing over the bridge in Nomahegan Park in Cranford. The park offers winding paths for joggers and bike riders, playgrounds, and picnic tables. Enjoy all that nature has to offer and the scenic surroundings. Nomahegan Park welcomes visitors with events, festivals, and more. The annual 4th of July fireworks are held in Nomahegan Park.
